Denver Post’s 10 most popular Denver Broncos stories of 2018

Here’s a look back at The Denver Post’s top 10 most popular Denver Broncos stories of 2018, as determined by our readers.

10. Broncos part with six assistant coaches after 5-11 season

A 5-11 season can rarely pass without significant changes, so although Broncos coach Vance Joseph was told in January he was safe for another season, many of his assistants were shown the door.

9. Denver Broncos, with visions of an entertainment district, are ready to say goodbye to south stadium parking lots

The Denver Broncos and public officials are ready to pull the trigger on an idea that for years has fueled speculation and intrigue: tearing up the sprawling south parking lots at the former Sports Authority Field to make way for an entertainment district.

8. Kirk Cousins? Alex Smith? Baker Mayfield? With Broncos, everything is an option at QB.

Just after the 2017 season ended, the talk in Denver was all about the Broncos’ next quarterback. If Alex Smith is not an option for Kansas City, could he be one for Denver? What about Kirk Cousins? Or Drew Brees? Or Baker Mayfield or Josh Allen or Josh Rosen or, hey, what about Eli Manning?

7. Denver Broncos’ defensive end Adam Gotsis arrested on 2013 rape charge in Atlanta

Broncos defensive end Adam Gotsis was arrested in March for allegedly raping a woman in Georgia in 2013 while he was a member of the Georgia Tech football team. Gotsis was not charged in connection with his arrest after a “careful and thorough investigation” by the Fulton County District Attorney’s office.

6. Broncos make cuts to submit initial 53-man roster

Who makes the team and who is sent to the curb? On Sept. 1, Ryan O’Halloran and Kyle Fredrickson provided live updates of NFL Cutdown Day, following along with all of the Broncos’ moves to finalize their 53-man roster.

5. Kiszla: With job on line, Broncos coach Vance Joseph makes gutless choice in loss to Browns

“Fire everybody. But start with coach Vance Joseph,” columnist Mark Kiszla wrote after Denver’s Week 15 loss. “Is that too harsh? With his job on the line, Joseph turned gutless. And his lack of nerve cost the Broncos in a 17-16 loss to Cleveland” in December.

4. Kiszla: After another smelly loss by Broncos, John Elway needs to ask Gary Kubiak to replace Vance Joseph as coach

After losing to the Jets in Week 5, Kiszla had this to say: “Vance Joseph reeks of an NFL coach that can’t do the math and is always late with the answer. Why can’t his boss see it? Can’t John Elway smell it?”

3. Kiszla: The Broncos’ problem? It wasn’t Chad Kelly. It’s the nonsense John Elway has let go on too long.

“The Broncos have 99 problems. But at least Chad Kelly ain’t one,” Kiszla wrote after Denver released the embattled second-year quarterback. “The Broncos have been fooling themselves for too long, with the misguided belief a Super Bowl champ guilty of letting itself go could get back in shape with a few nips and tucks instead of an extreme makeover.”

2. The Broncos’ options at No. 5 in the draft just got even more interesting

A day after the Broncos introduced Case Keenum as their new starting quarterback in March, the team’s options with the No. 5 selection in the first round of the NFL draft got a bit more interesting. Ultimately, Denver would select Bradley Chubb with the pick.

1. Broncos backup QB Chad Kelly arrested after allegedly entering strangers’ home, sitting on couch and mumbling incoherently

Kelly, the Denver Broncos’ backup quarterback, was arrested in Englewood in October on suspicion of first-degree criminal trespassing after police allege that he randomly entered a couple’s home and was beaten by the homeowner with a vacuum-cleaner tube.
